Fishing Rods for Surf Fishing

Surf fishing Rods

So I wanna start with fishing rods which is the most important tool,

First Let’s Explore this Surf Fishing Rod Types:

Spinning Rods : Spinning Rods are easy to use and I think really good for starters so you need to find the best one and don’t worry I will also break down what factors to consider. In short, Penn Battle II or Ugly Stik GX2 is a fantastic rod for various conditions.

Surf Casting Rods: Surfcasting rods are for long distance, powerful and longer than spinning rods,  It should be your choice for rougher water. St. Croix and Okuma are known for quality surfcasting rods.

What to Consider When Choosing:

Now let’s taIk on what factors to consider before choosing to make sure choose the right one, here below you can see the points 👍

Length : if you are new you can look for a shorter one for better control but keep in mind longer rod helps cast farther, so I will recommend you to look for a medium.

Action : For beginners moderate action works well because it’s easier to handle.

Power : So if you are newcomer and planning smaller fish go with light power but for heavy and big fish of course you will need to have a heavier power.

Some Rods I find out for you

I find out some best rods for you that you can buy as a beginner, yes I will recommend to do some manual research before action but here’s right a piece of cake 👍

So the first name is Pin prevail (10 foot rod), Pin prevail is medium heavy rated up to 5 ounces, Pin prevail 10 foot rod is good rod for larger bait and heavy weight. You can target red fish with this rod.

Our 2nd rod is ugly stick jigs (Nine foot) rod.

The 3rd one is Pin Squadron if you are planning for land-based shark which shouId not be huge but something you couId cast out  it is heavy rod rated up to 8 ounces and 12 foot (bull reds)

The next one is custom rod by frisky frins 11 foot medium heavy

So that’s it for the rods. As your honest teacher I will suggest you take some time to research because picking your right surf fishing rod is important, you know your fishing style and the kind of fish you’re targeting.

Start with a spinning rod or a moderate-action surfcasting rod for a solid beginning for your surf fishing journey! Let’s move below to the reels selection.

Surf Fishing Reels

Surf Fishing Reels

Now Let’s take your eyes to the reels, I can say choosing the right reel is like choosing your life partner (Joking). That’s why you need to know the best reel for your journey.

Here are the 4 types of reels

Spinning Reels: Spinning reels are not only my favorite but it’s crowd favorites, Specially for beginners because spinning reels are easy to use in many conditions. In my opinion if you are targeting smaller to medium sized fish in moderate surf conditions spinning reels are a nice choice. They can handle your case, and also spinning reels are great for casting lighter lures or baits.

Conventional Reels (Baitcasting Reels) : These baitcasting reels are for experienced anglers, It’s powerful, known for their strength, handling heavy lines and larger baits. And of course it’s for targeting big fish in rougher waters and heavy surf conditions.

Spincast Reels: It’s like spinning reels, user friendly, and a good choice for beginners. I think it’s great for learning, with spincast reels you can target small to medium size fish  in calmer waters. So it’s great for starting your journey

Fly Reels: Fly reels are now different from the above 3 types, and less common in surf fishing. I can say it’s for different fishing techniques. And it’s not for beginners but for anglers who have experience in fly fishing. So you can look for fly reels only if you want to go for a unique approach. That’s it.

What’s to consider before choosing?

Here are some points you can look before taking an action 👍

Line Capacity: Consider the amount and weight of the fishing line the reel can hold

Gear Ratio: It includes the speed of retrieval, high gear ratio helps quicker retrieval, which is suitable for many fishing techniques.

Material: Look what’s the material of reel, good materials include aluminum, graphite for longevity especially in some saltwater conditions.

Drag System:
A reliable drag system can prevent line breakage, look for smoothness and power of the drag system.

Reel Weight and Comfort: Consider the reel weight concerning the rod

Budget and Brand Reliability: If have a specific budget find out the reels under that budget and look at their features then after brands (Buy from reputable brands that are well known for their quality and warranties etc. Good Luck!

But still you are not alone here I find out some reels for you which you can checkout:

Penn battle 4000 (|| or |||) are the best reel and yes Penn are known for their high quality saltwater products.

You can also consider the SST which is high quality, So it’s your choice but both of them are really good working with the Carolina rig.

So you are now learning different types of reels, which will help you to choose the best one according to your level, target etc.
